Maybe not everything, but a lot of things. Prepping for this episode reminded me of a lot of things over my childhood related to diet that aren't as widely accepted as they were before.
I think of all the "Got Milk?" posters with famous athletes. The discussions of the Food Pyramid and how important it is to eat certain types of food a certain number of times a day. TV shows like "The Biggest Loser" and how it would glamorize restrictive dieting in order to lose weight fast. Along with all the ads that would tell you about a magic weight loss pill that would speed up your metabolism when all it really did was make you sweaty with a racing heart cause the pills had a ton of caffeine in them - I might be talking from personal experience with that one.
All that being said, getting ready for this episode really made me reflect on how we all kinda got here with shitty diet advice growing up and having a hard time making better choices now. Dr. Justin shared a lot of great info about the importance of limiting processed foods in our diet. If I'm being honest, that is definitely something that I can improve in my own life.
But part of me feels like up until recently, the topic of processed foods isn't discussed as much as it probably should. A lot of the discourse when it comes to diet seems to be more related to the kinds of foods we eat and not so much about whether it is a whole food or it is processed.
And I mention all that to say that we really haven't been given the best opportunity to make the best choices for ourselves. From a young age a lot of us were fed wrong info in a bunch of different ways. Our parents were given a lot of wrong info. And now that we are getting better information related to our diet choices, it is gonna take some time for us to be able to make better choices.
To end my rant on diet and what information we were given growing up - a lot of it was wrong, we now know that, it's gonna take some time before we make it a habit to make better choices. Check out our newest episode for a bunch of great info from Dr. Justin about how our diet impacts our mental health!
